Teams from Australia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States and historically from Canada have preliminarily registered for the tournament. In the fastest growing pesäpallo area Asia there is a lot of interest in attending the tournament, but countries like Bangladesh and India face financial challenges.

World championships in Pesäpallo are decided in three series of men, women and mixed teams. Finland has won all the championship titles in the history and is the big favorite this time too, although the tournament is played in the middle of the regular season.

Finnish national game pesäpallo celebrated its 100th anniversary 2022. The World Cup tournament is part of festivities although it was postponed until next summer because of uncertainties related to global covid-19 situation.

Hyvinkää is the first municipality to host pesäpallo World Cup second time in the history. Latest time was in 1997. Pesäpallo World Cup has also been played in Helsinki (FIN) 1992, Melbourne (AUS) 2000, Södertälje (SWE) 2003, Munich (GER) 2006, Pori (FIN) 2009, Gold Coast (AUS) 2012, Lucerne (SUI) 2015, Turku (FIN) 2017 and Pune (IND) 2019.
